PRODUCT

This blog is supposed to be posted before the 'PRODUCTION OF OUR DOME PRAIRIE '.due to too many assignments plus this and that i posted it later........but it's better late then never...right?

On 3rd September 2008, the lecture of the day is ' PRODUCTION '.........Cik Wan started the lesson by stating a sentence......'some certain things are done in a group , some are done alone'

what do you guys understand by that?as for me,......i will give an example of a piece of art.....if too many people were to get involve in that particular piece of art, it might turn out to be a mess....this is because different people will have different style......as the saying goes...'too many cooks spoil the soup'......while for team work we definitely need team members to complete our project for example the dome......1 person could have finished the project but it might turn out to be a mess...who knows right?

What is a product? product attribute consists properties of a particular product in other words 'sifat, hasil'.....in my point of view...product is an object with certain features.....and certain functions....a product must have special characters that can attract one’s attention to own it.....

products that can attract the attention of buyers

Cik Wan started asking us....'how do you look at a product?' one of the students said based on the physical appearance.....as for me i will first look at the layout of the product itself.....whether can it attract my attention......next i will determine the product through it’s function and lastly of course the price...

next... Cik Wan asked....’what makes a product beautiful?’ïs it the property material of the particular product or the attribute of the product?........definitely the colour of the product will be the first attention of the viewers....next it will come to the texture....doesn’t mean that product with rough texture is ugly and vice versa......it depends on how a person judge it.

Once again Cik Wan asked us how we define ugly? In the cultural aspect.....a baby who is born fair is beautiful while the dark one is ugly.....but in my opinion dark skin is not ugly.....sometimes those ‘hitam manis ‘ people are even better looking than those having fair skin..... just that you need extra time to observe them compare to those fair ones where they easily attract your attention because of their fairness.....i always believe that beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder....u can never judge whether one is beautiful or not because different human beings have their own description on the word beauty.....so just let it be.....:)

is dark skin ugly?u judge it....

ya this is fair and beautiful!!!

ugly betty?

In the second section we discussed about our dome ......Cik Wan told us about all the scale again from object, interior, building, premise, urban, regional, and global scale.

In this project, the dome will be our object..........interior of our dome will be upon the assembly of our materials and components.....building can be refered to the dome while premise shall be the site (HPB Minden).Next urban area will be our dome spine.....for this project regional scale is not applicable.....and finally global scale where our production will be documented and available in the internet....

Yeah.....everyone's mind at that time was only dome dome and dome......but any how ....all the groups did a get job for this project.but what ever it is, the most important thing is not the result but the knowledge and experience we gained.....CHEERS!!!!!!

intention:knowledge and experience

rule:to build a dome

DOMES DAY.....PRAIRIE NO. 33!!!!

Early morning of 10th September we started to gather in E48A with our product....we went in the hall carrying our dome properly packaged in the box we designed earlier on....yes indeed...it was easy to carry....many group came late....we waited for Cik Wan to start his briefing.....what an exciting day.....hehe....can't wait to show our dome to Cik Wan..... Cik Wan started by telling us the program of the day.....at 10am to 10.20am we were supposed to gather in E48A to listen to the briefing....10.20am till 10.40 each team need to hand up their report and dome pack submission........the 2nd programme where the carryability test path begins..... at 10.40am till 11.30am each team will have to take a picture of their team members and their product......and not to forget registration too at the temple.....at 11.30am to 12.00pm ,erection to our site and from 12.00pm till 12.30 pm we need to report the completion of our dome.........

Cik Wan told us that we needed to race to our site......and all of a sudden he told us that he had changed our site location.....and everyone was shocked about it.....my team, PRAIRIE which was number 33 on the list at the begining got a site near to HBP and we were happy about it but today he changed our site where it's somewhere at the end of the dome spine.....near the swimming pool....my goodness !!!!we needed to walk a long journey before reaching there.....phew !!!!any how we managed to reach there in time and set up our dome in about 10 minutes.....yes !'when there is a will ',there is always a way'.......after that we took a rest, then karen, liling and me started walking around taking pictures of other teams'' dome......before that we waited for Cik Wan for his comments....... and thanks again to Cik Wan we will sure to improve on that.....

PRODUCTION OF OUR DOME 'PRAIRIE'

After receiving this assignment from Cik Wan with all the rules.......we started seaching for team members......we needed 5 in a team.......yes so phei li, li ling, karen ,yanbo and me formed a team by the name of PRAIRIE. Our team motto, 'When there is a will, there is always a way'......no matter what obstructions we face we will always be able to handle it without fear.......before we started our discussion....all of us went back to gather informations and we agreed to meet in ROTI BAKAR ( the restaurant that we always go to have our discussion ...hehe...)on saturday morning.......at first we wanted to use bamboo as the struts but we found out that one of our members could get mop sticks from her school for free.!.....this is to obey the the rules given by Cik Wan....zero cost.....We even went to Cik Wan to get some advices.......and brought along our sketch of the dome.....thanks to Cik Wan for his help.....

At the end we decided to built a 1V geodesic dome ( we were told by Cik Wan the lesser the connections the more stable the dome will be )

The materials we used:
1) mop sticks (from one of our members school)
2)screws ( sponsored by our members family)
3)boxes (boxes from laptops)

For your information mop sticks can be recycled into hangers, fire woods, etc. Screws can be reused and paper boxes can be sent for recycling...... life span for our dome is about 1 month....yeah but i feel it can last longer than that.....

PRAIRIE'S INTENTION
we purposely designed it in a way that it is easy to carry, light, easy to fix and can be kept anywhere as it does not require alot of space.

ACT
We used a few days to complete the dome......it was tough but fun.....We did alot of brainstorming. After discussion in ROTI BAKAR, we went to yanbo's house to build our dome......we did some research first...then started sawing the mop sticks.....try our best to think of the best way for connections.....at first we tied our mop sticks with strings then one of our members gave an idea to use screws....and we agreed with it....so the next meeting., we drilled holes and went to alot of shops to get srews.....it was a hard work drilling all those mopsticks....but that was not all....the worst was connecting using screws......tough time....we kept taking the screws in and out.....PHEW!!!!but at last we managed to do it successfully......:)after that we spend a little time for the package as Cik Wan did emphasize about the package when we went to see him that day.....then we varnished our dome to make it even more attractive....while waiting for it to dry....a few of us started preparing our report.......yup we finished our dome on that day itself........the day before our domes day, we went to yanbo's house again to practise fixing our dome......we gave ourself time and make sure we get to set up the dome in 30 minutes........before going back yanbo carried the dome which we properly sealed it in the package to liling's car so that we can transport it easily to our dome site...... Below were some of of pictures.....our hard work!!! :)

we started with some discussion among our members....

yanbo sawing the mop stick

our members thinking of ways to do our connections

our dome halfway done!!!!

definitely can fit 5 of us!!!!

i am trying to help around

continue our dome the next day.....this time we just need to screw it.....easier then before!

happily fixing it although tired!

while others were busy with the screws i did the report....
yeah our report finally done!!!hurray.....

took pictures of the screws just in case we forgot how to fix it....good idea right?hahha
touch up the dome to make it attractive!go prairie!go prairie!
i am thinking how to design the package using 'dell' boxes.....

yes yanbo helped me and it's nearly done....not bad after all the package...hehhe

leaving it to dry....

dinner in sambos cafe after a hard day....

yeah finally done....happy:)

practising how to fix the drop a day before domes day......

yanbo carried it by himself to li ling's car.....check!! proven carryable....

SCALE OF THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT

On the 27th August 2008 Mr. Wan started the class by recaping the 6 elements he taught us last week.....(INTENTION, ACT, PRODUCT, ACTOR, RULES AND SITE) Scales are divided into 7 levels
1.OBJECT

2.INTERIOR 3.BUILDING
4.PREMISE
5.URBAN
6.REGIONAL
7.GLOBAL

All this scales play a major role in the build environment.....

In the level 100 Course Introduction to Built Environment, 1997 -2007 ,
we started disccusing about intention.....INTENTION means a type of ideology, a person's design and even a person's theory in producing a certain thing........next it comes to ACT which consists of scope of a work from the starting to the ending point. It is also related to development producers.....PRODUCT can range from the design of a physical object to the physical world.....and ACTOR refer to us!!!! the future architects, interior designers, construction managers and so on........LAW is important in our life as it is the legal aspect of a particular development while SITE can be very small such as a piece of paper on the table to a large factory on a piece of land an even to the internet......

Next we discussed about global scale.....'' what is global scale?

How do we look at this world?'' different people will have different thinking about the global scale.....it can be the earth while other may think it can range to the internet....
with lots of constructions and developments, our earth is dying....how can we have a sustainable earth if the activites above are not controlled? Is sustainable earth like IATROGENCIDE (medical errors that cause death)? humans trying to develope this world but they have neglected the condition of the earth....we can see this in every part of the world....with all the natural disasters and pollutions.....so u decide whether did we mankind did a good job in making the world a better place.

the picture above shows our dying earth.....but it is still not too late to safe it!!!!!we the new generation will who will be dealing with the construction industry should hand in hand make the world a better place for our future generation.....

and that's the end of our lesson, next we were given our next assignment. Assignment B about real world construstion......we were asked to build a geodesic dome with zero cost, pakaged, prefabricated, accommodate 5, carryable by 3 people, assembled in 30 minutes, only by team members, show team identity, assemble on 10 September from 11.30 am to 12.00 pm, lifespan less than 12 months and recyclable.
We are supposed to get a team which consists of 5 members and at least 1 is from a different major.....we are going to design, build and assemble the dome at HBP premise (details will be given later ). After that we are asked to blog out our production.
It's not an easy project after all after hearing all the rules above.......we are only given 2 weeks to complete this project while all of us still have many other assignments to complete!!!
